FAQs

I think I smell gas in my house. What should I do?
Natural gas is normally colorless and odorless. The Sunrise Gas Department adds a distinctive odor resembling rotten eggs, so that you can smell the gas immediately should a leak occur. While a faint odor of gas may mean a pilot light is out and should be re-lit, a strong odor signals an emergency. Leave your home and call 9-1-1 immediately.

I have questions about my bill. Who do I call?
All billing questions should be addressed to the City's Public Service Department. You can reach Public Service at (954) 746-3232.

What are the advantages of using natural gas?
Natural gas is a reliable energy source that's also environmentally friendly and safe. Another reason to consider making gas your energy choice is the potential for savings. Natural gas appliances may cost less to operate than electric appliances. For some gas appliances, such as clothes dryers, your operating time will be reduced as well.

Do you sell gas appliances?
The Gas Department does not currently sell gas appliances. However, they may be purchased at many of the same locations where electric appliances are sold.

Do you repair gas appliances?
The Sunrise Gas Department makes repairs related to appliances' gas flow and burning functions. We do not fix mechanical problems or perform cosmetic repairs.

What is involved in installing natural gas service at my location?
Whether or not natural gas service can be installed depends on the proximity of an existing gas main and the amount of gas your location will use. In some cases there may be a construction charge to install pipe mains and service lines to your location.

Prospective residential customers: If there is a gas service main running through your lot or an adjacent lot, you can have a service line and meter installed. You may even be eligible to receive incentives that will assist with the cost of installation and appliances. Call the Gas Department at (954) 572-2299 for details.

Prospective commercial customers: Call the Gas Department at (954) 572-2299 to check on the availability of gas service in your area. Substantial assistance for the extension of gas mains and service lines are available to high-use customers. The City also offers discounted gas rates for gas air conditioning and other incentive plans.

After my house has been prepared for natural gas, how do I request service from the City of Sunrise Gas Department?
Once your outside and inside piping have been completed and inspected, your meter is in place and your appliances are installed, contact Public Service at (954) 746-3232. You'll be asked to provide a deposit, and may also need to complete an application for service.

What areas do you service?
The Department's gas mains service most of the City of Sunrise, as well as parts of Lauderhill, Tamarac and Weston. We also provide wholesale gas to other distributors in Broward County.

I'm planning to construct an in-ground swimming pool in my back yard. How can I find out if I'll encounter any gas lines or other utility lines?
Dial 1-800-432-4770 - Sunshine State One-Call of Florida - and provide your excavation location. They'll contact all affected utilities, which will in turn contact you within 48 hours to inform you of any underground utility location where you plan to dig.
