Car Safety Seat Check-Ups. Each month, the Department's certified inspection technicians provide free car safety seat check-ups to help protect the City's youngest residents. The technicians offer hands-on installation instruction, check the condition of safety seats, and match model numbers against manufacturers' recall lists. Several times throughout the year, Police Officers - in conjunction with the City's Police Explorers - offer free child fingerprinting. The prints are given to parents and/or guardians for safekeeping, and may be invaluable in the event of an emergency. Fingerprinting for employment purposes is available only to City of Sunrise residents, and is provided free of charge. To have your fingerprints taken, please go to the Police substation at the Village Civic Center (6800 Sunset Strip) or the New River Civic Center (60 Weston Road) between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Bicycle Registration. To help prevent crime and aid in property recovery, the Department registers children's bicycles and keeps the documentation on file. For details, please call (954) 746-3384. National Night Out Against Crime. This annual event, held in cities nationwide on the first Tuesday in August, helps heighten crime- and drug-prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in anti-crime efforts, and strengthen relationships between neighborhoods and the Police. Through this organization, the Police Department works with the City's mature population to facilitate the exchange of information, reduce the criminal victimization of older citizens, and enhance the delivery of law enforcement services to seniors. For more information, please call (954) 746-3384. SAFE 911 Phone Program. The SAFE (Seniors Access for Emergencies) Program provides used cellular phones, free of charge, to eligible seniors. Through Sunrise CARES, participants call a computerized telephone system daily to notify the City all is well, or report a problem. Those who require assistance or do not call in are contacted by the Police Department. For information on enrollment, please call (954) 746-3600. Additional Programs School Resource Officers (SROs). Through the SRO Program, Sunrise helps foster a working, trusting relationship between students, parents, school personnel and the Police. SROs are currently stationed in each elementary, middle and high school in Sunrise. They're certified to provide Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), and in a unique position to serve as role models, mentors, problem solvers and community liaisons. Police Explorers. This program provides a means through which young men and women ages 14 to 20 may decide, through actual experience, whether they would like to pursue a law enforcement career.
